How to Tie a Bow Tie

The beauty of a self-tied bow tie knot lies in the small imperfections and asymmetry of doing it yourself. Don’t be intimidated. Essentially, it’s much like tying shoelaces. The result is style that’s a cut above the rest and unavoidable swagger at any formal event.

Watch this easy demonstration of how to tie a bow tie from our Head of Design and resident style guide, Nick Picchione. As with everything, practice makes perfect.

Here is a step by step on tying a bow tie

Step 1: Start with you collar up, wrap the bow tie around the base of our collar with one end about an inch and a half longer than the other end, take the longer end and cross it over the shorter end.

Step 2: Bring the longer end up behind the neck loop, pull it snug, and throw it over your shoulder out of the way, fold the short side in half and center it across the collar point to create a bow shape. Take this longer side and drop it down over the front, fold it (into a bow shape) and push it through the opening behind the other bow shape - think of it like tying a bow on shoelaces.

Step 3: Take the two opposing folded ends and gradually tighten and straighten to create a nice shape –much like tightening and perfecting the bow on a gift box.

Undo the bow and collar button as you leave an event for the full 007 effect.
